The sixth floor at the Atrium MC in Heerlen is completely empty: it has been stripped to accommodate renovation work. It is a raw space; a kind of construction site in glaring contrast with the hospital's other floors. It is the ideal location for WO BIN ICH?
The dance theatre production WO BIN ICH? is composed of two solo performances. The first, WO BIN ICH?#1, transports the audience obtrusively and poignantly into the mental processes that make up the four phases of Alzheimer's Disease. In the second solo, a beautiful, young and strong woman presents a picture of her life with a physical disability. Her limitations spur her on with an immensely powerful urge to manifest herself in the world.
WO BIN ICH?#1 was nominated last year for the 14th International Solo Dance Theatre Festival in Stuttgart, and is based on a dance film by Sven Schaepkens. Choreographer Elsa van der Heijden has spent many years trying to lift dance out of its isolated position. Dance is by far the best suited medium to express our deepest emotions when words fail to say enough. The two solos - WO BIN ICH? #1 and #2 were created especially for mentally and physically disabled audiences.
Elsa van der Heijden is reassembling her performance for Cultura Nova that was originally created in co-production with AINSI and is adjusting it to fit this special location.
