Death, love, nature and mysticism are the principal elements in Clair de Lune, a film by director Michael Kolenbrander. He describes it as a ‘film noir fairy tale’. Clair de Lune tells the story of solitary individuals, whose lives become entwined through the death and burial of a stranger.
The film opens in French-speaking Belgium, in lonely natural surroundings. This is where we meet Tristan, a hermit who is faced with human tragedy in spite of his withdrawal from society. The river then takes us to the Netherlands, where we meet people equally confronted with their own human natures.
The films by young up-and-coming 26-year-old director Michael Kolenbrander are pure poetry: an attempt to capture what is indescribable, a quest for the mystical and beautiful. The film is set to the music of Roy Bemelmans, who is currently studying at the film academy in Los Angeles to further develop his craft. This is a tried-and-true, sure-fire combination.
Michael Kolenbrander founded Zuiderlingen Films, a film production company in Parkstad that works in closely with talented artists from the Euregion. The company’s goal is to develop films with high artistic merit. A total of approximately one hundred regional artists collaborated in its creation.
The premiere of this film by promising filmmaker Michael Kolenbrander will be held in the Royal Theatre cinema which was built in 1938 by architects Peutz and Bongaerts. It is one of the most beautiful and oldest cinemas currently in use in the Netherlands.
This project is supported by the Municipality of Heerlen, the Province of Limburg, Huis voor de Kunsten Limburg, Cultura Nova and the Brand Cultuurfonds Foundation.
