In 1936, the northern face of the Eiger in Berner Overland was the only unconquered mountainside in the Alps, as it was the most dangerous and steepest face of them all. The previous year, two mountaineers died trying to scale its heights. This movie is a reconstruction of the climb undertaken by these two young German mountaineers, Toni Kurz and Andreas Hinterstoisser, in 1936. The film captures the mindset of this age perfectly and gradually reveals just how well the phenomenon of mountaineering tied in with Nazi ideology.
