Das Buch der Klänge, performed by the young, American pianist Bobby Mitchell, is an exciting adventure in space and sound; a minimalist work that explores the sound of the piano and the resonance of the performance venue. This piece does not have what you would call a narrative structure; it is more like a collection of sounds. The twelve-part Buch der Klänge is one of the most remarkable creations in the history of contemporary piano music and was written between 1979 and 1982 by composer Hans Otte (Germany).
More than thirty years after its creation, it is remarkable that this cycle is still as powerful today as when it was composed. Following the example of John Cage, who was a close friend of his, Otte’s goal was to liberate sounds from their traditional constraints. If sounds are given ample space and air to breathe, time to resound and are accepted just as any other of nature’s creations, they will speak to you and hold up a mirror to the world.
American citizen Bobby Mitchell is generally known as a pianist, but his talents expand beyond this field - he also composes and performs as a conductor. As a musician he can see beyond the limits that the repertoire - which is considered traditional classical music - might set and is someone who steps over boundaries with great pleasure to widen his field of vision. The result always yields an enriching experience, for both the audience and the musician.
Because they are aware that this is such an exceptional opportunity, intro | in situ asked Wytske van der Veen and Remy Kroese of Atelier RAW to develop a concept for the performance of the complete Buch. The special location and setting will contribute to an intense experience of this masterwork.
