Ensemble 88 is a professional ensemble for contemporary chamber music. On the occasion of the retrospective for composer/architect John Cage, the ensemble will perform a twopart concert. John Cage (1912-1992) is considered one of the 20th century’s greatest innovators in Western art music. His famous 4’33” is a piece where the performer sits still for 4 minutes and 33 seconds and in which the random sounds of the surrounding environment are in fact the musical work. Ensemble 88 will play short pieces by John Cage as well as two of his most acclaimed pupils: Christian Wolff and Morton Feldman. The ensemble will also present the premiere performance of a work by American composer/trombonist James Fulkerson written especially for Ensemble 88. These concerts aim to establish a link between architecture and music. A brief explanation of the architecture will be provided by Ton van Mastrigt, former municipal architect for the city of Heerlen. Special guest will be James Fulkerson, trombone.
