Felix Thorns ‘machines’ are music-making sculptures. Constructed in his bedroom, they translate rhythmic audio structures into a three-dimensional visual show. The Machines, as a hybrid form of musical instrument and kinetic sculpture, are both performance devices and art installations. Thorn uses them explicitly to continue building on John Cage’s experiments with the prepared piano and the role of machines in producing sound. While building he altered hundreds of piano parts and they can provide light, sound and movement. Flexible ensemble of tiny little radars in a composition that is more than the sum of its parts. The most complex things are so visualised and paint a powerful picture of the way systems work. Or how ideas constructions work, like the oeuvre by John Cage.
