As a result of population decline, vacancy is becoming increasingly visible. If there are fewer people, consumption will ultimately be reduced as well. Many of us view this as a sign of degeneration and the beginning of the end. Perhaps it is time to place this in a new framework, in which vacancy is not labelled as deterioration, but as a resource.
The second NEIMED Kr!mp lecture will focus on Vacancy as a Resource. This lecture, held by guest speaker and acclaimed founder of the Shrinking Cities Institute - Terry Schwarz, focuses on the concept of transience as a means of exploiting vacancy. She is involved with Pop Up City in Cleveland: initiatives for temporary use and is currently interim director of the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative.
Schwarz’s lecture does not stand alone, but ties in with other local developments. Prior to the lecture Tim Prins will present his project called STAD.preparaat, a study that investigates new strategies to combat the perforation of the city centre and impoverishment of the living environment.
Jeffrey Kuckelkorn of 5.0 will cater a thematic five-course dinner and the evening will conclude with a cultural programme in collaboration with Cultura Nova.
