This programme sees Ensemble 88 'whispering' along the path in the fascinating space between sound and silence. Japanese composer Toshio Hosakawa articulates it quite nicely: ”Music is the place where notes and silence meet.” Hosakawa (1955) sees a relationship in the composition process between principles of Zen Buddhism and his symbolic interpretation of nature.
French composer Tristan Murail (1947) is one of the leading figures of the so-called “Spectral Music” or “Spectralism”. Composers search within this movement for every possible shade of sound colour and harmony. About Feuilles à Travers les Cloches, he says: “One imagines a rural scene, foliage, distant bells. In the resonance of the bells we hear the whispering of leaves moving in the wind. There is a storm brewing..."
German composer Wolfgang Rihm (1952) set down a dynamic indication in his piece Deploration from 1973: “durchgehend ppp!” which means something like “constantly very soft”. This composition contains something of an eternal movement, of music that, once set in motion, can keep moving under its own power.
Durch den Nebel by young Belgian composer Daniel Hilligsman was commissioned by Ensemble 88 and will première during Cultura Nova. Hilligsman also balances silence and sound in this three-piece composition, to which the surtitles ”Feel the Smallest Vibration” and “Silence and Sound” bear witness. Aachen composer Michael Reudenbach (1956) uses expressions in his 2007 Trio such as “Schattenklänge”, “undeutliche Tonbildung” and “durchschimmerende Tonhöhen” to guide musicians through the twilight zone of sounding silence.
The musicians in Ensemble 88 this evening are: Chantal Bohets (piano), Angelique van Duurling (flute), Leo van Tol (clarinet), Jan van den Boomen (percussion), Paul Pankert (violin), Jos Kamp (cello).
