Maria Jerez

This Side Up

Theatre / Performance

In this unique theatrical performance called This Side Up,theatre maker Maria Jerez redefines the existing space with her box construction. She asks a number of students to create their own space with 1,000 boxes in a former mine pumping station in the Schutterspark in Brunssum. During this building process, the public are locked into the construction work. The boxes are used as bricks for the newly designed space. At the end of the performance, the students built a theatre and gave this post-industrial space a new use. The simplicity of stacking boxes, causing the space to take on a different significance, speaks loudly to the imagination.

The Municipality of Brunssum recently renovated the former mine pumping stations while maintaining the building's distinctive characteristics. Thanks to their changed spatial definitions, these historical areas will remain part of Limburg's cultural heritage.

Performance artist Maria Jerez (Madrid, 1978) studied dance and theatre in Madrid and Paris. She also studied art history, audio-visual communication and film animation in Madrid. Jerez has worked on her own solo exhibitions since 2001 and is now a highly sought-after artist for various theatre and performance festivals around the world. Jerez performed at Dutch Festival aan de Werf in Utrecht and at Noorderzon in Groningen.
