Shaun Gladwell is a versatile Australian video artist who incorporates his personal experiences into films, performances and photography in a critical and poetic manner. Gladwell takes his inspiration from the youth culture of skateboarding, hip hop and graffiti art. In a solo exhibition at SCHUNCK*, he will offer an overview of work that includes two films.
In Pataphysical Man,you see a reckless breakdancer doing head spins on the ceiling with arms and legs spread wide. The business-like architectonic decor is in stark contrast to its environment and that has a liberating effect.
The film Apologies 1-6 is the central piece in his MADDESTMAXIMVS series. In this film, a motorcyclist stops next to a dead kangaroo on the side of a desert highway. He cleans the carcass and buries it up the road. It is a recurring ritual that is repeated various times. It is also a reference to the early work by conceptual artist Joseph Beuys and to George Miller's Mad Max film trilogy.
