SKIN is an incredible dance experience performed for 60 people in the intimacy of a circle. Viewers form a living skin around the dancers and the dance floor, the translucent sheet behind them encasing them like a transparent shell, behind which stands a sound circle of speakers using spherical and penetrating city soundscapes to sweep everything and everyone away.
SKIN is the third evening-long performance by Pia Meuthen (1972) and is performed by Danshuis Station Zuid, for which she will serve as house choreographer until 2012. The performance, set to première in May 2011, is the result of a European collaboration between Düsseldorf (tanzhaus nrw) and London (The Place).
Pia Meuthen uses SKIN to represent an incomprehensible, urbanised, anonymous world through four characters – two single men and two single women. They long to encounter one another, for a touch, for skin on skin contact, for true contact. SKIN is a contemporary, understandable and occasionally sensual sketch of public, fleshy, emotional lives. This is a performance that both literally and figuratively gets under the skin. Compelling, accessible and recognizable.
