It’s only natural that an open air exhibition about site-specific theatre in the Netherlands should also be part of Heerlen’s Cultura Nova. After all, the festival has 20 years of experience with this type of theatre in the region. This unique exhibition is presented by Theater Instituut Nederland.
What where the motives of past theatre makers for working on-location and what are their reasons now? Which work methods did they add or drop and where do the roots of each group lie? What were the historical highlights of site-specific theatre and what can we expect in the future?
Theatre creator Theun Mosk designed a village where you can find and experience these answers first-hand. Blue and orange houses provide onlookers with the experience that fits each performance fragment and a dark blue block tells the story behind it all. This is where the theatre creators offer further explanation and depth to those interested learning about it.
The audience is released right from the very start. In the first house, where it's raining, the theatre creators explain what site-specific theatre is. The tone is set – this is a very personal experience, an exhibition that allows you to participate and really experience something.
The performances, theatre creators and groups in the orange houses subsequently return to the dark blue block at the middle of the performance grounds. Companies that have been on Cultura Nova's programme in the past naturally return in this performance too.
