Ultima Vez / Wim Vandekeybus

Monkey Sandwich

Dance / film

Monkey Sandwich (a literal translation of “Broodje Aap” or “Urban Legend”) is a wonderful example of the ultimate Cultura Nova performance. Wim Vandekeybus uses a mix of dance, performance and film to show a young, naked dancer/performer struggle against a film while the images of this adventure are projected on an enormous screen. It starts as an average story about actors, but ends as a delirium of urban legends – a monkey sandwich squared.

Under the screen stands a messy collection of fans, a giant aquarium and a mountain of crumpled paper. Only later do you notice the paper assuming human forms. The plot demands a great deal of attention. With a fantastic cast and performance, Vandekeybus paints a vivid picture of the actors' dilemmas.

Schauspielhaus Köln invited English director Jerry Killick from Forced Entertainment to participate, and within a short period of time he drove the actors crazy with his demands to “make it real”. Actor and dancer Damien Chapelle materialises from the mountain of paper. He messes around a bit, as naked as the day he was born, and noses around in the mountain of paper like a squealing pig. When he suddenly rips off his pig nose, does he become human or a sort of hybrid creature? Slowly you see parallels between what is happening on stage and what is happening on the screen.

NRC: “A wonderful movie performance, a whirlpool of tall tales”

De Telegraaf: Monkey Sandwich, a fascinating trip!"

De Standaard: "Go and see for yourself, use your imagination and marvel at the energy Vandekeybus manages to bring together so beautifully"
