Artwithout borders for everyone.
The Bonnefanten is once again taking part in Cultura Nova this year with its pop-up museum. This time, it’s showcasing the special exhibition *Walking in the Sea*by the Afghan-Dutch artist Malina Suliman. She creates a map of the world using earth and sand. You can walk across all the countries on it, whilst standing, as it were, in the sea. Come along on a journey around the world – this artwork knows no boundaries!
Malina Suliman (Kandahar, 1990) lives and works in the Netherlands. From a young age, she has been creating art that addresses oppression and women’s rights. As a result, it was no longer safe for her to remain in Afghanistan, so she came to the Netherlands. Her work explores exile, identity and social justice. She challenges the political and social structures that perpetuate exclusion and inequality. Suliman demonstrates that borders are not a given, but human constructs that can either divide or unite people.
Borderless performance
On Suliman’s world map, you can easily travel from country to country. In reality, this isn’t possible for many people; their passports don’t grant access to all countries. The clay world map will be created during two performances (on Saturday 29 August and Friday 4 September). Everyone is invited to attend these performances and to walk and dance across the map. Together, we’ll blur borders and make the world one.
And there’s more to do in the pop-up museum. There’s plenty of crafting going on under the awning. Make your own (fantasy) map and plan your own dream journey! Get a stick-on tattoo or come and relax in the deckchairs.
Until 6 September, the Bonnefanten Museum is hosting the exhibition*The Studio #11: Malina Suliman*, featuring a gigantic clay world map as its centrepiece. You can catch a sneak preview at the pop-up museum! For more information, visitwww.bonnefanten.nl.
