Make your own flag!
During this workshop, which you can join whenever you like, you’ll create your own flag together with artists Krista Burger and Kenneth Letsoin. All the flags will then be displayed on the Festivalplein as part of an art installation that keeps getting bigger and bigger.
The workshop
In the workshop, you’ll draw or paint your own flag on fabric. On your flag, you can express ideas, feelings, memories or questions about yourself or your surroundings. You’ll discover how colours, shapes and symbols can tell a story, and, together with the artists, you’ll experiment with simple yet powerful imagery. The city, your neighbourhood and public spaces are an important source of inspiration for this.
‘Let it fly’ is part of ‘What the flag?!’, an international, multi-year visual arts project by Greylight Projects, a platform for art and culture in Heerlen. A previous instalment of this project was on display during Cultura Nova 2022. At that time, artists were invited to respond to a flag based on their own practice and vision. This year, the focus is on creating, sharing and observing. What does a flag tell us? And what happens when your message becomes visible in public space? Because all the flags will be displayed together on the Festivalplein. Your flag, too, will thus become part of the festival.
The workshop is suitable for people of all ages. The installation and the flags from the workshop will then be on display on the festival square until the end of the festival.
Once the festival is over, you can take your own flag home with you.
