“The images created, both live and filmed, the musical production, both live and electronic, the meaningful actions, the sophisticated mise-en-scène, the lighting – absolutely everything in the musical theatre production S.A.M (Stop Annoying Me) by Dyane Donck Company has been carefully and meticulously crafted.”
  • Theaterkrant
“Comforting musical theatre that invites you to reflect on youth and adulthood.”
  • Gonzo
“No words of saccharine pity, but sharp observations, and music that gave voice to the maelstrom within her mind and her longing for peace … it fitted perfectly with the deeply felt vulnerability of the performance.”
  • Klankgat
“A comforting look back at one’s youth, presented in a Bach-worthy fugue of image and sound, stunningly staged.”

A sensory performance about trauma, identity and healing.

S.A.M. (Stop Annoying Me) is a gripping journey through the thoughts and feelings of 16-year-old Sam, who feels out of place in this world. Film, live music and performance come together in an immersive, multidisciplinary show about (re)discovering your own identity in a world that feels hostile.

Is it you against the world? Or your body against itself?

Is it you against your body? Or the world against you?

On stage, we see Sam as a 16-year-old, portrayed with razor-sharp precision on film by singer Nina Kortekaas. And we see the adult Sam, played live by mezzo-soprano Els Mondelaers. The performance offers a glimpse into her soul as her younger self and as deliberately forgotten memories force themselves upon her. At that moment, the adult Sam is confronted with the fears of her youth; feelings of alienation, loneliness and incomprehension come back to life.

An intense musical journey

The present and the past subtly merge, musically accompanied by cellist Jacqueline Hamelink and violinist Claire Adams. They bring Sam’s world to life with live music, ranging from electronic pop and contemporary classical to dark, alienating soundscapes. The result is an intense musical journey, in which memories and inner voices, trauma and recovery become palpable
